Cognitive Behavioural Therapies

Cognitive behavioural therapies combine cognitive and behavioural techniques. Clients are shown ways in which to change thoughts and expectations. Cognitive behavioural therapies have been know to be highly effective in areas such as phobias, obsessions and drug and alcohol treatment.

This is widely used throughout the NHS.

Gestalt

Gestalt counselling is based on the belief that the human response to experiences is understood by a persons thoughts, feelings and actions. It is intended to create a heightened sense of self awareness through analysing behaviour and body language, and also to give expression to repressed feelings. Focusing on the present moment has particular emphasis to this style of counselling.


Brief therapy

This type of counselling offers a cognitive behavioural approach with a small, planned number of sessions, with a possible single follow up session after some time has elapsed.


Person Centred Therapy

Person centred therapy is a style of counselling also known as client centred counselling. This style of counselling is based upon the assumption that a client needs help with a very specific, current problem. This type of counsellor will be accepting to the needs of the individual. This in turn will help the client to become more accepting and to come to  terms with their specific needs. This is a style of counselling that has become prominent within the UK.


Existential Therapy

Existential counsellors hold a belief that life has no essential meaning, and that any meaning has to be found or created. Existential counselling will involve making sense of life through a personal world view. This will include a willingness to face one's life and one's issues.


Transactional Analysis

Transactional analysis is a style of counselling which focusses on an individuals growth and development.  It is also a theory related to growth and child development. This can help in making connections to our past and how this may influence decisions we make.


Transpersonal Counselling

Transpersonal counselling refers to a style of counselling which places an emphasis on a person's human potential, spirituality, and  a heightened state of consciousness.
